My daughter tells me that I should find and install spy bot on my computer. Is she correct? If so, can someone tell me where to find it? Thanks.

For 2) I could not get the given link, even cut and pasted. Try: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp
Spybot S&D is very fast since it compares the contents of the HD with a long list of known spyware. Adaware does more of a scanning.
Just be careful, and don't remove anything unless you are sure.

If you want to clean spyware from your computer, do this:
Get and run ALL of the following .. ALL 6 of them! Each cleans a different type of problem, and although there is some overlap, the only way to be sure, is use ALL OF THEM!
1) A good antivirus program (Norton or Trend for example)
2) Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/ )
3) Ad-Adaware ( www.lavasoft.de )
4) The Cleaner ( www.moosoft.com )
5) SpywareBlaster ( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ )
6) Hijack This! ( http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html )
ALL of them! All but Norton are free and can be found on Google. UPDATE each after installing them! |
Thanks for all that information. I have a good virus program but wasn't aware of all the other programs available. I will save all this
information and start digesting and using.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks! |

There is some problem with the spybot S & D sites.
I got at least two CGI-limit reached, and I don't know who JOE is, I got:
Modified files in JOE when it aborted on Mon Jul 5 11:13:34 2004
In any event the kolla website will show download locations all over the world. The pcWorld is one of them.

Just for completeness' sake, I feel I have to chip in with my own spy/ad/mal/virusware settings. I have no spyware detector, no antivirus scanner bogging down my machine, and certainly no overly paranoid message-quarantining email scanner. I'm buck-nekkid except for a decent hardware firewall. My secret is to not use IE or Outlook, to keep my OS and browser generally updated, and to not manually execute email attachments. I do use a virus scanner ad hoc on downloaded software.
I've never had a problem in several years. Though since I don't scan for them I suppose it's possible I do have a problem. But if I do, it's not visible. I also never have the weird problems I see reported in places like this forum; problems with files in my Mozilla/Netscape profile being moved or destroyed or seemingly unwriteable.
To be sure Mandrake's advice is probably better than mine. My point is that a little bit of knowledge and circumspection will go a long way, and with that in mind the importance of the whole Protection Industry is overrated.

I tend to agree with you but with all the talk, writings, listings. telling me that I need this protection and that protection I think well, I'd better have that particular program on my computer. Thanks for your imput.
