I am hacking at a sticky situation (see http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=31850 for more details) by using scanreg/restore in Windows 98 to put me back to a point where I knew things were okay. Risky, inelegant, but seems to do the trick.

However, in this instance, and in several past instances in which I've used scanreg/restore, the following happens:

1. I run it.

2. Problem solved.

3. Problem remains solved for rest of day, but...

4. The next day, when I restart my computer, problem reappears.

It's almost as if starting a computer on a new day brings back the "unwanted" registry. If memory serves me, in the past, I've run ANOTHER scanreg/restore on Day 2 (step 4) and everything then remains fine, from Day 2, Day 3, and onward.

Is my guess about the "unwanted" registry coming back a correct one? Why does this happen? Any way to maximize my chances that I can get away with just one scanreg/restore to (essentially permanently) fix a problem?

I did something like you describe only once, and it worked like a charm. Are you saving the new settings, though?

Without knowing a little background as to the nature of the original problem, it's really not possible to hazard a guess as to the reason for its reappearance.

My initial issue (flash plugin stopped working in Netscape 7.1/Win98) seems to be solved. See http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=31960#31960 for more detail.

On Sunday, after again having to "go back" to a previous registry backup, once everything was working okay, I did a Windows restart. I don't know if that restart was necessary, but I think it must be, to preserve the existing registry settings (as opposed to get computer running, then shut it down at day's end, and the next bootup occurs on a new day).

Anyway, things have been as I want them for 48 hours now.
