You can get a better deal if you are (or your faculty is) with Microsoft's MSDN and you can get legit copy of Windows 7 Professional for free. |
Hey, Antony... my wife and I are getting a "better deal". Lin's son works for Microsoft and on Thanksgiving he's loading up three copies of Windows 7: her desktop, mine and her lap top... for free. Can't beat that. |
Nice. And please let us know your experience of Windows 7.
I wouldn't mind getting a free legit copy of Windows 7

Haven't decided on Windows 7?
Ars Technica has a detailed review on Windows 7 .

I just got my new Dell Studio XPS 9000 with Win7u Home Premium, the Intel I7-920 CPU, 6 gigs of DRAM - don't ask me what kind, it is all so good now and so cheap, one need not even ask at Dell.
I set it up in short order. It ate up my network in one fast gulp.
It is lovely.

Good to hear that some are getting good Dell machines.
I shall never buy from them again.

I don't know, John. My wife and I each have a Dell XPS420 desktop and she also has a Dell XPS1330M laptop. None of these computers have ever given us a day of grief in the time we've had them (two years on the laptop and one on the desktops). I think there's probably lemons in every make of computer.
BTW... just did a clean install of Windows 7 on this desktop. I'm liking it very much so far.

I think three lemons and bad tech support is far to much for me.
First computer was a dell, graphics chipset and ram fried. Dell said it was not covered my warranty.
Second computer, also dell, hard drive failed, PSU failed, also not covered my warranty.
Third and current computer: Dell Studio 1537.
-Motherbord fail.
-GPU Fail.
-HDD Fail.
-RAM Fail.
-Three covered by warranty, HDD not because dell said the could not re-create the problem.
I'm sick of lemons!!! I think they should be used to make lemonade and not make my life stressful, that's what my family is for.

Interesting, on my new monitor with my XPS 9000. No DVI port. VGA and HDMI, but no DVI. The computer has VGA, DVI, and HDMI.
I do not care if HDMI is "better".
Worse - and I love Dell - all they sent was the VGA cable. When I bought my Vista XPS410, where both the computer and the monitor had VGA and DVI, they sent both cables.
So, I called up, and they are sending me a hybrid, HDMI X DVI.

I'm still feeling my way, Mandrake. It's been less than 24 hours. My wife is having trouble with her laptop, however.... can't get any sound. She's royally pissed right now so I'm staying in the family room.

Some of you may remember that I've been getting the Experience Index of only 1 on Windows 7 (evaluation copy) under Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac.
Recently, I upgrade to Parallels Desktop to version 5, and I am extremely excited with the much improved user experience.
The Aero effect and Aero Flip effect are cool! Now, I think I might get a copy of Windows 7.
