I own a Mac OS X. When programs aren't responding, I immediately use the Force Quit option to end the program, and restart it.

Does this process eventually damage the hard drive?

Is there an alternative solution to programs not responding?

Usaully when prgograms don't respond in Mac OS X there is a bigger problem. What exactly happens when they don't respond, do you get "The Volley Ball Of Death" or does it simply just stop working. Maybey, you have too many things installed on you Mac, I'd recommend going through and uninsttalling useless programs. Also, programs that do not respond frequently, may have to be re-installed.

Well, sometimes, if you wait for a while, the application might be back to responsive. If in such case, it means that there was far too much data or system resource being used by the app itself, rather than to interact with users.

No, but your .plist files might get damaged.

Reporting to the developers, and see if there's an update to the applications that has better compatibility with the OS.
