12 Dec, 2006 1:06 am Unable to install Netscape 8.1.2 on a Win 98 SE machine [sdp=80379]

Hello everybody.

I still happily use Win 98SE (jokes are welcome). I decided to take Netscape 8.1.2 for a test drive.

So, I downloaded the nsb-insatall-8-1-2.exe file from Netscape's website and I ran it.

Well, a window pops up stating that my Operating System is not supported. Then it gives me a list of supported OSs (which includes Win 98 and Win 98SE). Funny!

I do have Win 98 SE. Sysinfo shows it to be version: MS Windows 98 4.10.2222A .

Anybody has a clue why this is happening?

TIA,
Peteski

Hmm... nobody has any ideas?

Does anybody know how I can get in touch with tech support at Netscape? I looked at their tech support page and only way seems to be a fee based phone support. Any way to contact Netscape for free? Via email maybe?

Thanks,
Peteski

What are your system specs? Netscape 8.x's installer is very restrictive when it comes to checking your system to see if it meets the system "requirements."

The system requirements are below:

Operating Systems
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE, ME

Minimum Hardware
• 233 MHz processor (Recommended: 1 GHz processor or greater)
• 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 256 MB RAM or greater)
• 35 MB hard drive space

Your version is Win98SE, which I have, but not online, so I don't know if I could help. So, if your system is within specs, it should work. I, just noted that you are using a Sun OS, so is it another computer that you are talking about?

Well the installer specifically errored out stating that I'm running unsupported Version if OS. I have plenty of resources.

Windows 98 SE
1.8 GHz AMD processor
256Mb RAM
C drive has over 1Gb free space.

As far as the machine I'm posting my messages from - it is my Solaris machine at work. Win 98 is my home PC.

You may want to try the Netscape Browser newsgroup. You will need an @aim.com, or @aol.com address to be able to post.
I would test it myself, but it is a pain to switch my two computers, as Win98 SE is not on line.
If you wish, I may post for you, quoting the entire thread.

Hi folks,

I do not have AOL or AIM, or any of that, but I am registered at Netscape Browser Community, just in the hopes that something might happen to replace 8.X with something that works.

Just go to Netscape.com, click on Browser, Community, Message Boards, I just did it on another tab and went right in.

Address Jay Garcia, he's The Man.

Thanks Fulvio - sure you could post the entire thread there for me. Thanks!

I finally stumbled upon a fix for this issue and I'm posting it for future reference.

Win 98 SE (out-of-the-box) comes with IE5.

I just applied the Service Pack 1 (including IE6) to this machine. Now, I was able to install Netscape!

But the Netscape's installer error was very vague. At least when I tried to install Adobe Acrobat it specifically failed stating that it needs the IE6.

Peteski,

For what it's worth, I run Windows 98SE, and have never had any problems installing Netscape 8 (any version). I have IE 5.5 SP1 installed, but no IE 6.

Have you checked out the AOL Forum yet? I don't think it is the OS or IE that is the problem, unless it is the Sun OS box that you're having the problem with...

Hi Ramona,
thanks for the info. No, I'm not installing Netscape 8 on my Sun box. I sometimes post from work, that is why SunOS shows up in some of my posts.

I didn't go to the AOL forums as my problem is resolved. Before I installed the Service Pack along with IE6 I had a plain Win 98SE (no service packs installed). Maybe that was the difference between your Win98SE and mine.

I suppose that I could try to uninstall the IE6 and SP1 and see if the Netscape install fails again. But I don't want to bother. Besides, I didn't much care for Netscape 8 so I uninstalled it. I'm back to using Mozilla and Firefox.
