been away for awhile- like 6 months. burned out my motherboard the other day[please don't ask!]. just got a new machine and am in process of installing and reinstalling.
had and was happy w/ns 7.2 but before putting it back in, checked the site and see there's a new mozilla [1.7.12] and sea monkey and am wondering, being basically a simpleton who just reads email, surfs, and downloads: should i stick w/7.2 or is there value to me in switching? i wanna get off this ie asap but its been a long day and i can use some advice.

Netscape 7.2 was an excellent choice as a browser, around the time of it's release in 2004, but since
the 7.x series has now been discontinued by Netscape/AOL, it contains some security vulnerabilities
that have since been patched in subsequent releases of the Mozilla App-Suite and Mozilla Firefox.

The Mozilla Foundation have discontinued full development of the Mozilla App-Suite, and placed it in
"maintenance mode". This means that it's now frozen at v1.7.xx, it won't receive any new features.
New updates of the Mozilla App-Suite will be released to include bugfixes and security patches.

SeaMonkey is a community led project, continuing development of the Mozilla App-Suite with new
features and improved functionality, but independently of the Mozilla Foundation. Mozilla.org is
providing the SeaMonkey Project with webspace for it's official website, and server space
for users to get the latest (or recent) SeaMonkey builds and releases.

Seamonkey 1.0, (which would've become Mozilla App-Suite 1.8 if the original app-suite hadn't been
discontinued by Mozilla) is currently in beta. Despite the fact that it's still considered beta quality,
it is very stable, and almost good enough to be used as your primary browser.

I say "almost" only because there are still a few bugs, and some extensions made for the original
app-suite have not yet been updated to be compatible with SeaMonkey. But if you don't mind a
few relatively minor bugs, and you're not particularly bothered about browser extensions,
then SeaMonkey is good enough for your everyday use now.

Otherwise, I would recommend upgrading from Netscape 7.2, to Mozilla App-Suite 1.7.12, which
is what I currently use as my main browser. It's rock solid stable, very reliable, and there have
been no critical security vulnerabilities found in it's codebase.

Alternatively, you might like to consider the standalone Mozilla apps, Firefox and Thunderbird.
Firefox is a standalone web browser, while Thunderbird is a standalone e-mail/news client.

If I were you I would stay away from Netscape.Netscape 7.2 is out of date with security updates. Netscape 8.4 is a firefox want a be. The problem is the support is not there. The last time Firefox had a security problem it took them 7 to 10 days to offer a patch to correct the security problem. It took Netscape 2 months to correct the same problem. At that time I removed Netscape 8.4. It is a nice browser but it is worse than IE in security updates. I always had Firefox on my computer I like it and now I have Seamonkey and I love it. It is very stable and it is like my Netscape 7.2 with all the security updates.

I would go with either Mozilla 1.7.12 or with SeaMonkey 1.0 beta. SM 1.5a is still a bit too buggy for my taste.

For simplicity sake, I would go with Mozilla1.7.12. But, one never knows. I had to create a new profile for it, after using it for several months. Why, I have no idea.
In my hand Seamonkey1.5a1 has been amazingly stable, unlike its browser only counterpart Firefox1.6a1, which has been a disaster.

I've been encountering less problems with SeaMonkey 1.5a over the past month. It's been pretty stable, any problems that result in Talkback launching appear to be web-page related (bad coding).

I've experienced problems in SeaMonkey from the newsreader. In particular, when I load the newsgroup for reading, "if" I should happen to attempt to change the View... it crashes. I've repeated this crash scenario four times now so there's no question but that a bug exists. Since I "tend" to perform this odd behavior (changing the View while reading newsgroups), I've had to resort to dumping SeaMonkey and returning to Thunderbird/Firefox. I'll try it again when it's had more opportunity to mature.

Hi, Captain... gotta run. The wife is waiting and the party is getting started.

The newsgroups were alt.penpals.forty-plus-yrs and alt.religion.christian.east-orthodox. The View changed each time was in Threads from ALL to Unread. As I made this change, the client froze solid. Thanks for the help.

thanks to all who replied. since i finally got my msn mail to run all my user names (no thanks to anyone working there or at verizon), i was going to try the firefox 1.5 but profman scared me off a little. i downloaded the mozilla 1.7.12 instead and the web surfing works fine but i'm not crazy about the e-mail so i may take the firefox also and wait a few days to decide.

this may be a different thread and i hope i 'm not breaking protocol. feel free to move +/or retitle:
i likely set it up wrong but i put my aol i.m. e-mail from my last computer in the mozilla 1.7.12 mail and newsgroups as an IMAP account and sent a test message to my msn. the msn received the message but when i went back to mozilla mail the message still hadn't been put in the sent folder so i cancelled it out.
also now when i go to the mail and news groups i get an hourglass and after 10 or so seconds the message "connection to server incoming.verizon.net timed out"
if you still haven't slapped your forehead, i haven't downloaded the aol i.m. yet!- so is this just a matter of me doing everything bass-ackwards?

ok , i removed the above mentioned account, downloaded and installed the instant messenger. i put in as pop's my 2 verizon/msn accounts (a subject for yet another thread) but when i put in the aol i.m. account (to be more correct the netscape.net account) again, same thing: hourglass then timed out. i thought it was an imap account,am i wrong?

THANKS, FULVIO. truthfully, i seldom used the netscape.net account. it was a freebie that came w/the AIM and i'm just trying to replicate what i had on ns 7.2 with moz 1.7.12 so no loss there. as i noted somewhere above, i'm also going to download the firefox 1.5 when i get around to it to compare w/1.7.12. if i choose firefox at that point i will likely take thunderbird as well.

don't know when i'll get to it though as i'm reinstalling apps i lost when my last computer died and i'm going back and forth a lot.
