Hi!

I did some search but can't seem to find a problem like mine. Hope somebody can help me!!!

My niece played with my iBook two nights ago (when I went out of the room to get something) and when I came back I noticed that the open applications started to fail and quit. So I shut my iBook down and then restarted it. It started out fine until the log in page. I was asked to input my password (which is normal) and then clicked log-in. It said logging in and then I saw a blue screen which stayed that way, instead of loading my start up applications and desktop. All I can see is an empty blue screen. I then tried to restart/shut it down again but same thing happened. I can see the Mac OS X initializing then asking me to log-in then the blue screen.

I then tried some do-it yourself troubleshooting by logging in on a safe mode. Same thing happened, when I input my password (on a safe boot mode), all I can see is an empty blue screen.

I also tried to start-up in single-user mode and check fsck by typing /sbin/fsck -fy on the command prompt but it said my volume HD is OK. I am on vacation and I haven't brought my Disk Utility disc with me so I'm using fsck.

Another thing I tried is to reset PMU by removing the battery and holding down the Power key for 5 seconds and then turning it on again. Still same problem, desktop won't show after I log-in.

I am really confused what went wrong.I've never experienced any problem with my iBook since I bought it last May, 2005. There is no Apple Center near where I am right now so I can't have it checked up. But I badly need my iBook to do some work.


Here are some specs of my iBook G4 12", 768MB RAM,
30GB HDD, OSX Tiger bought last May 2005.

Jo-ann,

Is the blue screen you see the default blue background colour (before loading the background wallpaper?) And can you see menubar or Dock at all?

Have you tried logging into Single-User mode (NOT safe mode)?

Yes, the blue screen I see is the default blue background before loading the wallpaper and I can't see the menubar or dock at all. I only see an empty blue default blue background...=(

Yes I did try logging in in a single user mode but still the same thing happened, I can only see the blue default screen . I also tried the fsck check (which is like Disk Utility I think) and this can only be done when you are logged in as single user. When I did the fsck, it checked 5 phases of my HD and then the result said my HD is okay. But when I restarted my iBook, I can only see the default blue screen still (after I input my password for log-in).

When you are in single-user mode,

Try deleting following .plists
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

located under /User/[yourUserName]/Library/Preferences.
