28 Nov, 2005 10:50 am Missing Midi Plugin Netscape 7.2 |
[sdp=66767] |

I use Netscape Composer for family greetings. The last page I created had an embedded midi which plays in IE if Security settings do not prevent it from doing so...but it will not play in Netscape. The page displays a square with "download the plugin" message, but when I click to download, there no longer is a download. I obviously am missing a player. Have Quicktime and Real and Media Players showing in my About Plugin page....so what am I missing.
I have no problems hearing midis while surfing. I can't imagine what has gone wrong all of a sudden. Can't think of any new software that may have disrupted my setup. The code I used for this page is the same that I have been using for years.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I have never understood how those pesky .midi files work. It is matter of adhering to code, in first place, and then to have the proper plugins installed, as well as file types in Windows directing to the correct programs.
But, I would take no bets. I received an e-card from bluemountain.com. The picture looked fine, but there was no sound, in Firefox, Mozilla, and, yes, Internet Explorer. However, I could hear sounds in Netscape7.2, going through the AOL Media Player. And, when I tried to send the same e-card, I could hear sound everywhere.
I don't think that I was of any help, but you can see that it is a widespread problem, no matter which plugin I have, or anything.

You're missing a MIDI player, hence the prompt to install one. If you search through your about:plugins page for 'MID', you'll probably fine that neither the QT or Real plugins are actually adding support for MIDI files. Maybe apple have dropped MIDI support from their newer versions ...?
Anyway if you want MIDI support, try either, or both, of these Plugins. Both are unsupported now, but I still find they work fine for MIDI...
Cresendo
Beatnik
Once installed you'll find some entries for the MIDI MIME Types:-
audio/mid and audio/x-mid etc

Looking at the home page for Crescendo, there appear to be different downloads for each type of browser. I just downloaded the one for Netscape (XP), and for Mozilla, and both were identical. Both opened to download into the same location, i.e. for NS4.x. I suppose I can change the directory, but then what? I can't get any installation of the Crescendo program which I can see. I have the files which I need, in place. But, only the test works.
There is, allegedly, support for .mid files with Real10.5, QT7.x, WMP10, and Winamp. Only the latter gives signs of life, but AOL Media Player is activated.
I, honestly, do not know where is the thing, and, why it works in NS7.2, and not in Firefox. .mid files make me weary.

Cresendo
Beatnik
SUCCESS!
Thank you so very much Macallen for the info. And Fulvio for taking the time to dig deeper into this problem.
I am happy to report that Cresendo did the job. Also, I now recall that previously, I did have this plugin along with Beatnik, but don't know when I lost them. I plan to now download Beatnik as well and keep it as a backup.
You two are so appreciated. Thanks again.

The weird thing is that I have the .dll files in the plugins folder. and, weirder yet is the fact that all tests work fine, but not all MIDIs are created the same.
I am still digging.
