Does anyone know what causes a vsinit .dll validation error?

What version of ZA are you running and on what operating system?
I recommend that you go to the ZoneAlarm support site and ask there. The site has gotten so convoluted, though, that it may be difficult to get a good answer.

A complete manual uninstall can be found on the ZoneAlarm site, although it is a bit complicated, and I'm not sure how long that link will work. (I have copied that page in case you want it later.)
I no longer keep up with ZoneAlarm versions since I now use a hardware firewall instead, so I can not offer much more advice.

Thank you, Edward. I checked it out but unfortunately that was not the error message I received. The truth of the matter is, my computer completely froze up on me.. solid as a rock. I'm running XP Home Edit. and in a year and a half I have never had this happen. I hard shut it off, booted up and the same thing happened. Needless to say, I dumped ZA and am now running smoothly with my trusty old Norton. Shouldn't have wandered to other pastures, I guess.

Can you recommend a good hardware firewall, Profman? What sort of cost is involved? Why is it a better way to go than a software firewall?

I have, so far, only experience with ZoneAlarm and my LinkSys BEFSX41 router, although other firewall solutions exist. A router-based firewall uses no systems resources since it is not installed on your computer. A router also will not conflict with your programs since it is not running on your computer. My router does not require a yearly update fee like ZoneAlarm did, and the one router services all four of my computer systems.
The downside to a router/firewall combination is that it normally will not examine outgoing packets like a software-based firewall normally will. Also, the features in my router might be surpassed by features on newer routers. I had some trouble getting everything wired up since the BEFSX41 is a wired router, not wireless.
I picked out my router by reading reviews like those found at Scot’s Newsletter and his Product Reviews. A recent review (May, 2003) rates the Netgear RP614 & D-Link DI-604 routers better than my LinkSys router.
Software firewalls are a different case. You need to find one that is compatible with your installed software. ZoneAlarm is good, but the pro version is beginning to gather a large number of extra features. I find that the free version of ZoneAlarm does pretty good.

There were problems with the first version 5 release of ZoneAlarm, which they have since fixed. Unfortunately, it should not have taken Zone Labs as long as it did to fix the problem.

If you are using the free version. You can expect little when it's free..
Zone Alarm Pro (a yearly fee and well worth it). I've never seen anyone
really expect much out of the free version. Every evaluation by the labs and Magazines have run head to head tests with other software Firewalls and the Pro version comes out on top everytime.
It comes configured to run, right out of the box, a wonderful help file and their Technical service has an in house controled ,all areas of intrest message center like 'Silly Dog'. Tweeking the Pro Version is easy and rewarding. I'm
told that tweeking is limited or non-exixtant on a hardware Firewall. Please do not consider a Linksys Router as a Firewall, as some do.Down load it and try it free for 30 days, if dont like it, it dies a natural death after 30 days. Do not waste time with the Robot Tech I do no think it is linked up with the Artificial Intelligence yet.

Hi edmartin
If you're using the Pro version of ZA, are you using the new suite with AV or just the firewall? And if just the firewall, what AV do you run in conjunction with ZA that plays nicely with it? I have always used either Norton or McAfee (I prefer Norton). Thanks.
