It's already official the Mozilla 1.7 release will be later than planned. This is because it must replace the 1.4 long use build. And this means it must be as stable as possible. This version will be used by vendors to include in their software. This includes AOL.

Netscape 4.81 sounds interesting but a new netscape sounds wonderful.

I'm curious. If the next version of Netscape is based on the "stable" release of Mozilla 1.7, and has the usual Netscape accoutrements added, do you former Netscape users who left for Mozilla 1.6 plan on coming back? It should be parallel to Mozilla in performance and stability for a while. Netscape 7 BigGrin

No CCK probably means no Netscape for me. It is also quite evident that Netscape will never be kept current or in good shape. Netscape 7.1 was lame (resources leak) from the start and was not fixed in a timely fashion.

OTOH, I would be eager to create a customized version of Netscape or Mozilla if given the tools.

Same here. If there's a CCK for the next Netscape, then the DJGM-i Distros will be back
but rebranded as the DJGMOL Distros. A relaunched "Club Netscape" is unlikely though.

I wonder if any Mozilla CCK application will ever actually be produced . . . ?

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

If only Netscape could make their CCK program open source, then the people behind
the aformentioned Mozilla CCK project, would have a decent template to build upon.

Unfortunately, since it's probably rather doubtful that a new CCK will be released for
the upcoming new version of Netscape 7.x, then I seriously doubt that Netscape
will release the CCK source code anytime in the forseeable future, if at all.

BTW . . . Wellander, you've got the quote tags wrong!

I'm not that well versed in what the fired developers at Netscape invested to produce a CCK. I'm sure from your pessimisim that it must be beyond what the current AOL staff could (or would) do. Profman, Greg, how were Holger and Antony able to produce their customizations of 7.1? I was looking at Netscape.com and it said the latest CCK version was for 7.0. Would that CCK not work on a Moz 1.7 the same as it did for 1.4? Forgive my ignorance! Smile

Profman, you share my sentiment put much more concisely. I had posted earlier concerning this and not to bring the party down, I'm not going to bother with it here. Mozilla IS my Netscape now.

"I wish I could share the same enthusiasm over this news as some of the rest of you. Personally, I'm not going to install something that's not going to be regularly updated and maintained; AOL's revenues are down significantly so surely it would stand to reason that the resources to apply an abundance of energy into Netscape would be minimal but surely AOL would seek to appease its Netscape audience if it would mean some sort of hint of bolstering revenue in lieu of The Petition.
Make no mistake, I'm a 'Netscapian' from the early days (first install 0.9) but that was back from the days when Netscape was a NETSCAPE endeavor - it's been an AOL product since 1998 and it shows. 'Netscape's' momentum came to an all-stop last summer and the gears were gearing down far before that.
Mozilla now is showing the old spirit and momentum Netscape once had. I for one have come to view Mozilla as the 'old' Netscape (I'm mean from the good old days) as Netscape reincarnated.
I would just hate to see everyone getting all up in the air excited over this news; I would liken a revving up of the old Netscape engine to something like a Beatles reunion, just ain't gonna happen folks. AOL's doling out a bone to us all and I actually somehow take it as an insult for them to play on everyone's sense of loyalty in hopes that somewhere in the mix it's going to generate some revenue somehow. (AOL's definitely been hanging out with Micro-marketing far too long)

As Anthony reminded us - this is a bit off topic but, as far as there being a Communicator 4.81? Take a look at latest news from Sun: http://apnews.myway.com//article/20040402/D81MRSG00.html

Not going to happen either ...

Comes a time to accept and archive things as history and move forward.

Just my 2c."

Customizations of Netscape 7.1 were obviously done by more laborious means than an easy pass through the CCK software since no CCK for Netscape 7.1 exists. Only dedicated experts could produce good customizations in a reasonable period of time. I decided not to pursue the more difficult route of customization especially after Netscape 7.1's leakiness became evident.

Well, even if we just have a "stock" Netscape release available this summer, I can still customize mine a bit with all the extensions available to the Mozilla suite (the majority should be compatible with a new NS) and tweaks to the user.js file. Smile

Since Netscape browser development is resuming, I wonder if Netscape CD sales will also resume?
